A quick tip to help with your Social Security Disability case.

Make sure that you tell your doctor about your major problems and how they restrict your daily activities.

It may be things like “My hands ache all the time. I cannot use my fingers to type or put away the dishes for more than 5 minutes.” Or “my legs are killing me. They go numb and swell when I walk or stand more than 10 minutes. I need to elevate them 4 times a day for 20 minutes each time.”

Ask your doctor to put this information in her records. It has to show up so Social Security can review it in deciding your case.

Social Security puts a lot of weight on what shows in the records.

Whatever you do, make sure that you do not tell your doctor that you are doing fine if in fact you are having problems. I have seen records in which patients do not tell the doctor the true extent of their problems. This does not help you get the medical treatment you need and it will certainly damage your Social Security Disability case.

Friday is a good day to reflect and sum up the week.

One tip to help and protect your Illinois Workers’ Compensation case is to report all your injuries as soon as possible.

This means putting in writing for your work all injuries that happened as a result of your accident.

Use your employer’s accident reports or incident forms if available.

If not, write down when your accident happened, how it happened, and what body parts were injured.

Make sure to date the report.

Make a copy for yourself.

Give the original to your supervisor or your human resources people.

You should also tell the doctor the same information, and if possible give them a copy of the report.

For instance, “On June 5, 2015 I fell on the steps at work while carrying boxes and injured my right ankle and hurt my neck.”

This will prevent the insurance company from trying to argue that you only hurt your ankle at work and not your neck. Or that you really got hurt working in your yard.

A little prevention will save you loads of trouble down the road.

Sometimes I will have people ask me if you can get Social Security Disability if you have cancer, or diabetes, or migraines.

The answer is maybe.

Social Security does not just look at your diagnoses.

It certainly helps to have a diagnosis; even Social Security Judges like to fit illnesses and conditions into categories.

However, what really matters in a Social Security Disability case is your limitations and restrictions as a result of your illness, injuries and conditions.

You must go beyond the name of your illness and prove that it limits your daily activities.

This means that it causes you problems with sitting, standing, walking, lifting, reaching, handling and fingering.

Or it causes you problems with concentration, focus, and staying on task, and makes you miss work.

You must show this through medical tests, doctors records, reports, and your testimony and other people’s testimony.

Just explaining your disease is not enough. The Judge must understand how it affects your activities of daily living.
