The bottom line is that the longer the wait to get a response to your disability claim, the more people who give up or die. Horrible way to save money but that is the consequence. More Judges, staff and lawyers needed to run the disability system and get decisions completed faster.

Social Security Disability- What to Ask Your Doctor

It does not hurt to ask your doctor to put your limitations in writing.

This will help your Social Security Disability case because Social Security wants your medical records to reflect your conditions, symptoms and limitations.

Some examples:

  • If you need to use a cane and the doctor knows this, then request a prescription for the cane. This shows that the doctor agrees that you have problems with standing and walking.
  • If you have problems with swelling of your legs, then request a note from the doctor showing that it would be helpful to elevate the legs.
  • If you have problems with using your hands and fingers due to neuropathy or arthritis, then request the doctor put in writing your need to rest your hands after 30 to 60 minutes of use.
  • If you have problems with concentration because of chronic pain or depression and anxiety request that the doctor note that you should be given extra time with tasks to accommodate this.

Not all doctors are willing to take them the time to address individual patient concerns, but after developing a relationship with a patient many are willing to personalize the medical records so it will reflect your true condition.
