A Metro spokeswoman on Wednesday again declined to comment on the fatal train strike that left animal rehabilitator Sandra Konopelski, 58, of Shiloh dead on the tracks near the Swansea station Friday. But the president of the wildlife-rescue hotline Konopelski worked for said Konopelski was notified by Metro officials there was an opossum on the tracks.

This is a terrible tragedy. Assuming the injured person worked for the employer, then she would be able to file a Workers’ Compensation claim. People who act as volunteers face a more difficult path such as a negligence claim against someone. Prayers and thoughts to her family and friends.

The trauma that results from this type of abuse will never be healed with money. However, the only way society measures damages in civil cases is through monetary awards. Those who look the other way when children are sexually abused should pay the penalty.
